Abortion Information
If you are considering abortion, we want to ensure you have access to accurate information to make the best decision for your situation. Schedule an appointment at Mosaic Virginia. (For possible same-day appointments, please call us during office hours.)
Abortion Pill
The Abortion Pill (also known as a medical abortion) is a 2-step method for ending early pregnancies. It is currently approved by the FDA for use up to 10 weeks gestation. The first pill is called Mifepristone. It blocks the effects of progesterone, a hormone that helps the growth of a pregnancy. The second pill is called Misoprostol and is taken within 48 hours to trigger contractions to expel the embryo or fetus.
Before you take the abortion pill, meet with a nurse at Mosaic to have an ultrasound that will determine the location of the pregnancy and the gestational age. This medical protocol ensures your health and safety.
Risks from abortion pill include excessive bleeding, incomplete abortion, infection, and emotional or psychological struggles. Learn more about the risks of taking the abortion pill.
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion involves the removal of the fetus from the uterus to end a pregnancy. This procedure is performed in a clinic or hospital by a healthcare professional (usually after 10 weeks gestation).
Different types of surgical abortions include:
Vacuum aspiration - using a suction tube to remove the embryo and uterine lining from the uterus (up to 14 weeks).
D&E - opening the cervix and using suction and instruments to remove the fetus and uterine lining (second trimester or 14-23 weeks).
The specific abortion procedure used depends on how far along you are and your health.
Schedule a same or next-day appt to get an ultrasound to determine the location of the pregnancy and the gestational age of the embryo or fetus. These are important things to know before having an abortion.
Medical reasons to not have a surgical abortion include having an IUD, ectopic pregnancy, and/or bleeding disorders. We are concerned about you and your health. You deserve the care and support you need during this time.
