Ultrasounds

Sonographer performing an ultrasound on a pregnant woman in a medical clinic.

Getting an ultrasound is the most accurate way to confirm and date a pregnancy. It helps you to determine three important details:

  1. Whether you have a viable pregnancy (healthy & growing)

  2. The location of your pregnancy (whether it’s growing within your uterus or not)

  3. How far along you are (gestational age)

How can an ultrasound help me?

Up to 20% of all known pregnancies may end in an early miscarriage, according to the Mayo Clinic. An ultrasound can reveal if the fetus is viable and located in the uterus.

Sometimes a pregnancy can mistakenly grow outside of the uterus (like in the fallopian tube) where it cannot survive. These are called ectopic pregnancies and are medical emergencies which can become life-threatening if left untreated.

If you are considering abortion, having an ultrasound beforehand is recommended for your health and safety. It can determine how far along you are and the type of abortion procedure you are eligible for. It can also make you aware of a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy so you can receive appropriate care.
