Will My School Counselor Tell My Parents?
Privacy and Notification Rules in Northern Virginia
School counselors, social workers, and nurses care about your well-being, but they must follow their specific school board's policies. If they believe there is an immediate medical or emotional safety risk, they may be required to notify your parents.
If you are not ready to tell your family and need a safe place to process with 100% confidentiality, you can speak with a community organization outside the school system. As a non-profit medical clinic, we protect your medical privacy. You can visit any of our local centers confidentially.

Can I Stay in School If I Am Pregnant?
Your Title IX Rights in Northern Virginia
Yes. Federal Title IX law protects you equally across all Northern Virginia school districts. Whether you attend public or private school in Fairfax, Loudoun or Alexandria, the school can not discriminate against you.
You have the right to stay in your current high school. You can’t be forced to switch to another school or to quit school clubs or sports
You can take excused absences for doctor appts, childbirth, or recovery if you have a note from a medical professional.
Teachers are required to give you makeup work for full credit so you do not fall behind on your diploma.
What Are My Options Under Virginia Law?

No matter which city or county you live in, Virginia state laws apply to your options:
Parenting: You can apply for state healthcare coverage through Virginia Medicaid or FAMIS MOMS, regardless of your county, which provide full prenatal coverage for eligible students.
Adoption: Regional agencies serve all of Northern Virginia and can help you build a free, completely private adoption plan where you can choose the family.
Abortion: Virginia law allows abortion, but if you are under 18, the state requires parental consent or a confidential judicial bypass.
